Method

How we ranked these agencies.

Everything starts from public, verifiable data. Strengths are written from each agency’s website; no rating or figure is made up.

Entry criteria

  1. Active, open Google listing with at least 10 reviews. Uclic, the publisher listed first outside the formula, is not subject to this threshold.
  2. Website online, and a Google listing that matches that website.
  3. One entry per agency: listings present in several cities are merged.
  4. SEO is the service listed first in the website’s title or H1. A web agency adding “and SEO” to website builds, an independent consultant, a copywriter or an agency based outside France does not qualify.

Score formula

Score = (reviews ÷ (reviews + 20)) × rating + (20 ÷ (reviews + 20)) × 4.91. 4.91 is the average rating of the verified pool. An agency rated 5.0 on 12 reviews therefore does not automatically beat one rated 4.9 on 90 reviews.

Limits

  • A Google rating measures client satisfaction, not technical quality or price.
  • Our database comes from a Google Maps collection across 27 large French cities: a very good agency without a Google listing or outside those cities may be missing.
  • Ratings change: the list is re-read at every update and an agency that closes or drops below the threshold leaves the ranking automatically.

From the database to the ranking

  1. 4,648agency listings in our database (Google Maps and Google, 16 services, 27 cities)
  2. 610unique agencies after quality filters (open, validated, website, Google listing, at least 10 reviews) and national deduplication
  3. 257agencies listed under an SEO service (local SEO, AI SEO)
  4. 226website online and Google listing consistent with it
  5. 173SEO genuinely present on the website
  6. 75SEO in the title or H1, neither freelance nor outside France
  7. 13kept at manual review of the 31 best rated (SEO as the main business)
  8. 10agencies ranked above

Main exclusions

  • 63 agencies that mention SEO without leading with it
  • 28 independent consultants or freelancers
  • 7 agencies based outside France
  • at manual review of the 31 best rated: 18 removed (generalist web agencies, consultants, copywriters, one agency outside France)
Checklist

Five questions to ask a SEO agency before signing.

  1. What is delivered each month

Audit, technical fixes, content, links: ask for the monthly deliverables and who produces them, in-house or subcontracted.

  2. Where the links come from

Ask how link building works (sponsored articles, digital PR, site networks) and how much budget goes into it.

  3. How results are measured

Rankings and traffic, but above all leads and sales from organic search: require reporting connected to Search Console and your conversions.

  4. GEO: presence in AI answers

ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews cite sources: ask how the agency measures and works on your presence in those answers.

  5. Contract length

SEO takes months. Check the minimum term, notice period and what you keep (content, access) if you stop.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does an SEO agency do?

An SEO agency improves a website’s visibility in Google’s organic results: technical audit and fixes, content that answers searches, links from other sites, local SEO. The most recent agencies also work on GEO, meaning the site’s presence in AI assistants’ answers.

Should you choose a local or a national SEO agency?

For a shop or a branch network, an agency specialised in local SEO (Google listing, city pages) is often a better fit. For a national e-commerce or B2B website, look at technical specialty (WordPress, e-commerce) and content method instead. The comparison above states each agency’s specialty.

How is this ranking of SEO agencies built?

We start from our database of 4,648 agency listings taken from Google Maps. We remove closed, rejected listings and those with no website, no Google listing or fewer than 10 reviews, we merge duplicates (an agency present in several cities counts once), then we check on each agency’s website that SEO is the service it actually leads with. The remaining agencies are ranked by their Google rating weighted by review count (Bayesian rating). Ratings and reviews were checked on 28 October 2026.

Did agencies pay to appear in this ranking?

No. No agency was contacted or paid, and none can buy its place. An agency that closes its Google listing or drops below the review threshold leaves the list automatically.

Why is Uclic at the top of the list?

Uclic publishes this comparison and lists itself first, and says so clearly. Its position is not computed with the formula: the agencies that follow are ranked solely by their Google rating weighted by review count.
